Bellevue Schools Foundation Announces Fall 2004 Classroom Grants
Grants totaling $65,046 awarded to schools throughout the Bellevue School District
BELLEVUE, Wash., Oct. 22, 2004 -- The next generation of authors, scientists, actors, artists, woodworkers,
historians, entomologists, and technology leaders will come from the Bellevue School District, thanks to funding
from the Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF).
For Fall 2004, BSF awarded 81 grants totaling $65,046 to schools throughout the Bellevue School District. Some of
the projects funded through these grants include:
- Young Authors Programs
- Entomology with the Bug Safari
- Wood Works Field Trip
- High-Tech Treasure Hunt: Introduction to Geocaching & GPS
- Enhancing Language and Literacy Through Drama
- Washington State History According to Salmon
- Science Explorations
- The Arts Through Time
- A variety of Arts and Sciences Field Trips
One grant recipient is Phantom Lake Elementary School, who will send its three fourth grade classes to
Tillicum Village on Blake Island via the Washington State Ferry - for some of the students this will be their
first ferry ride. During the trip, students will learn about Native American heritage and culture, the geography
of the Puget Sound region and the economic activity of a seaport.
"This grant means that kids who rarely leave the Crossroads neighborhood will have a real-life experience to use
for future writing or reading projects," said Susan Tochterman, fourth grade teacher at Phantom Lake Elementary.
"This grant will also give some students their first opportunity to attend a live performance or dine out,
which will not only enrich their lives but also cement their understanding of the trip by connecting a personal
experience to learning about Washington State. We are very appreciative of this grant, particularly for those
whose family circumstances don't allow for 'day trips' such as this. It expands horizons for all of our kids."
The Classroom Grants Program is an important part of BSF's funding, and is one of several initiatives supported
by the BSF as part of its mission of providing the best possible learning opportunities for all students in the
Bellevue School District. Since 1979, BSF has raised more than $9 million to support academic rigor, students
and teachers throughout the district. The Foundation awards grants to BSD teachers and staff every year as part
of its ongoing support of Bellevue schools. The BSF works closely with schools and the district to identify,
select and fund existing and new programs that benefit thousands of students.
About the Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF)
The Bellevue School Foundation is a powerful partnership between business and community leaders, parents and
members of the education community. BSF was created in 1979 by a concerned group of parents and community leaders,
who wanted to ensure quality education for Bellevue's children despite unreliable state funding for school
districts. Its mission remains consistent: to promote and help fund the best possible learning opportunities for
all students of Bellevue Public Schools. During its 25-year history, the BSF has raised over $9 million for
programs that reach over 15,700 students every year.
As a private, non-profit organization, the BSF depends on individual, foundation, and corporate donors in order
to fund its school programs. In partnership with the Bellevue School District, the Parent-Teacher Associations,
the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce and school educators and administrators, the Bellevue Schools Foundation helps
Bellevue's public school students achieve academic excellence.
