BELLEVUE SCHOOLS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES WINTER 2005 CLASSROOM GRANTS
Grants totaling $34,210 awarded to schools throughout the Bellevue School District
BELLEVUE, Wash., Apr. 7, 2005 -- Students throughout the Bellevue School District are getting real-world
experience in classroom projects, thanks to funding provided by the Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF). Projects
funded range from delivering the daily weather report using data obtained from charting daily atmospheric
conditions, to solving a hypothetical crime by processing forensic evidence.
For Winter 2005, BSF awarded 51 grants totaling $34,210 to schools throughout the Bellevue School District. Some
of the projects funded through these grants include:
- Bennett Elementary Weather Station
- Dig Into Geology!
- Young Author's Writing Project
- Oceanography Experience
- Catastrophic Events: Mt. St. Helens 7th Grade Field Trip
- Becoming World Citizens Through Reading and Research in Spanish and French
- Using Forensic Science Strategies to Enhance the Biology Curriculum
BSF grants are providing learning experiences beyond what state funding can provide. An advanced class of
fifth-grade students at Stevenson Elementary School is using the grant they received for their "Building Bridges
of Understanding" project, in which students are exploring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, tracing its roots in
history, economics and geography, as part of a year-long project. The idea for Stevenson's "Building Bridges of
Understanding" project came from Stevenson teacher, Paula Fraser. She met teachers from two Israeli schools,
one Jewish, one Christian Orthodox, while attending a conference on international education. By having her students
as pen-pals with both classes, the project helps students learn about the problems of the world, while also
learning to be good global citizens.
The Classroom Grants Program is an important part of BSF's funding, and is one of several initiatives supported
by the BSF as part of its mission of providing the best possible learning opportunities for all students in the
Bellevue School District. Since 1979, BSF has raised more than $9 million to support academic rigor, students
and teachers throughout the district. The Foundation awards grants to teachers and staff every year as part
of its ongoing support of Bellevue schools. The BSF works closely with schools and the district to identify,
select and fund existing and new programs that benefit thousands of students.
About the Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF)
The Bellevue Schools Foundation is a powerful partnership between business and community leaders, parents and members
of the education community. BSF was created in 1979 by a concerned group of parents and community leaders, who wanted
to ensure quality education for Bellevue's children despite the economic challenges facing the school district.
Its mission remains consistent: to promote and help fund the best possible learning opportunities for all students
of Bellevue Public Schools. During its 25-year history, the BSF has raised over $9 million for programs that reach
over 15,700 students every year.
As a private, non-profit organization, the BSF depends on individual, foundation and corporate donors in order to
fund its school programs. In partnership with the Bellevue School District, the Parent-Teacher Associations, the
Bellevue Chamber of Commerce and school educators and administrators, the Bellevue Schools Foundation helps
Bellevue's public school students achieve excellence.
