FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BOEING AWARDS MAJOR GRANT TO BELLEVUE SCHOOLS FOUNDATION
TO LAUNCH BOEING-BELLEVUE INTERNATIONAL MATH STANDARDS PARTNERSHIP
BELLEVUE, Wash., Oct. 21, 2005 -- Thanks to the generous support of The Boeing Company, the Bellevue Schools
Foundation (BSF) is pleased to announce the launch of the Boeing-Bellevue International Math Standards Partnership,
a curriculum development initiative to put in place a set of internationally aligned Kindergarten through grade 8 (K-8)
mathematics standards for students in the Bellevue School District (BSD).
The Boeing-Bellevue International Math Standards Partnership, supported by a $110,000 grant from The Boeing Company,
is the first phase of Kindergarten through grade 12 math curriculum that is aligned to the highest international math
standards. The partnership means that 10,500 K-8 students will begin immediately receiving a rigorous, accelerated
math instruction program. The goal of the partnership is to establish an internationally competitive math curriculum
model that elevates the mathematical ability of every Bellevue student to that achieved by students in the highest
performing countries in the world.
"To remain competitive globally, American students must progress further along the mathematical continuum before high
school graduation," said Superintendent Michael Riley. "In order to meet this objective, students must be provided
with a math program that allows them to achieve mastery of essential math concepts during their primary years and
reach advanced math courses (pre-calculus/calculus) in their secondary years. Thanks to Boeing's support of this
partnership, the BSD now has the resources to help our students receive the highest quality math curriculum."
"The Boeing Company is committed to helping all students achieve the same standards in mathematics as their
international peers, and providing teachers with world-class curriculum materials" said Joyce Walters, Boeing
Community Investment Manager, Early Learning and K-12 Education. "Boeing's partnership with the Bellevue School
District will position students to compete on a global scale for engineering and science-related jobs that require
strong, high-level mathematical skills."
