BELLEVUE SCHOOLS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES WINTER 2006 CLASSROOM GRANTS
BSF awards more than $34,000 in grants to schools throughout the Bellevue School District

BELLEVUE, Wash., April 12, 2006 -- Bellevue elementary, middle school, and high school students will be participating in numerous classroom projects that might not otherwise be available to them, thanks to the Bellevue Schools Foundation's (BSF) winter grants.

For Winter 2006, BSF awarded 51 grants totaling $34,786 to schools throughout the Bellevue School District. A few of the many projects that will be funded through BSF's winter classroom grants include:

  • Toymaker Workshops, in which elementary students will participate in a presentation and hands-on toy making workshop which focuses on and extends the principles and concepts students have learned in their 2nd trimester FOSS Balance & Motion Investigations
  • Math curriculum enhancement, in which elementary students will attend a 30-minute assembly, followed by hands-on exhibits and guided classroom lessons to promote the discovery of mathematical principles and their relationship to the students' daily lives
  • Onward, Ho! Down the Oregon Trail and Up to Mt. St. Helens, in which 5th graders will participate in a two-day field experience reinforcing their study of the American Western Movement and the dramatic landforms resulting from past and ongoing eruptions of Mt. St. Helens
  • Electrophoresis equipment, which middle school students will use to perform electrophoresis and learn about the application of biotechnology in a real life situation
  • Independent literature reading circles modeled on the Socratic Method will have 9th grade college bound students reading and discussing the concepts, themes and ideas of 6 classic and contemporary novels. This small group discussion will help introduce the concept of the Socratic Seminars which are an integral part of the 11th & 12th grade curriculum
  • Creation of a digital library by special education students, who will create and "star in" digital videos portraying various vocational and life skills. Videos will be used as a teaching tool in the classroom and as a resource for students and teachers district-wide through placement in a BSD digital video library

The Classroom Grants Program is an important part of BSF's funding, and is one of several initiatives supported by the BSF as part of its mission of providing the best possible learning opportunities for all students in the Bellevue School District. The Foundation awards grants to BSD teachers and staff every year as part of its ongoing support of Bellevue schools. The BSF works closely with schools and the district to identify, select and fund existing and new programs that benefit thousands of students.

About the Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF)
The Bellevue School Foundation is a powerful partnership between business and community leaders, parents and members of the education community. BSF was created in 1979 by a concerned group of parents and community leaders, who wanted to ensure quality education for Bellevue's children despite unreliable state funding for public schools. Its mission remains consistent: to promote and help fund the best possible learning opportunities for all students in the Bellevue School District. During its 26-year history, the BSF has raised over $11 million for programs that reach over 16,000 students every year.

As a private, non-profit organization, the BSF depends on individual, foundation, and corporate donors in order to fund its school programs. In partnership with the Bellevue School District, the Parent-Teacher Associations, the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce and school educators and administrators, the Bellevue Schools Foundation helps Bellevue's public school students achieve academic excellence.
