BELLEVUE SCHOOLS FOUNDATION RAISES $480,000 AT
SPRING FOR SCHOOLS ANNUAL BENEFIT LUNCHEON
BELLEVUE, Wash., May 31, 2007 -- Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF) raised $480,000 on behalf of Bellevue Public Schools at its 19th annual Spring for Schools Benefit
Luncheon, held today at Meydenbauer Center.
More than 950 business and community leaders gathered for the event to demonstrate their support of Bellevue schools' 16,500 students. Proceeds benefit BSF-funded programs
to support academic rigor, students, and teachers in the Bellevue School District.
The program, hosted by emcee Mona Locke, Former First Lady of the State of Washington, began with a performance by 30 members of the Lake Hills Elementary Choir singing their school
song, "We Will Stand As One". Attendees then heard presentations from several Bellevue students who have benefited from BSF-funded programs:
- Emily Holland is embracing studying physics as an 8th grader at Chinook Middle School through the BSF-funded 'Physics First' curriculum. Emily and her teacher, Wendy
Powell, shared their excitement in discovering that 8th graders are 'totally' up to the task of understanding physics.
- Josh Andreychuk, an Interlake High School 9th grader, shared that the 'Starting Strong' program allowed him to transition to high school with the study skills,
organization and determination he needs. With a head start during the summer, and support throughout the school year, Josh is confident that he will succeed in high school.
- Interlake 12th grader and athlete Anar Veliyev, with the support of a caring 'College Corps' mentor who helped him navigate the college application process, achieved
his dream and will be attending the University of Washington this fall. Anar came to Bellevue with his family from Azerbaijan when he was 7; his hard work in school while
contributing to his family and his community is an inspiration.
Bill Pollard, a Clyde Hill Elementary School parent and Bellevue business leader, concluded the event with an appeal to his fellow business and community leaders to step up
to the challenge presented by Bellevue School District Superintendent Mike Riley. Mike said "...This is an exciting time in education. With new technology & research,
teachers are sharing ideas to develop a cohesive curriculum throughout a child's education." The audience enthusiastically responded to Bill's request to 'give generously
to the Bellevue Schools Foundation.'
Since 1979, BSF has raised over $14 million to support academic rigor, students, and teachers throughout the district. The Foundation works closely with schools and the
district to identify, select, and fund existing and new programs that help the thousands of students reach their goals.
About the Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF)
The Bellevue School Foundation is a powerful partnership between business and community leaders, parents, and members of the education community. BSF was created in 1979
by a concerned group of parents and community leaders, who wanted to ensure quality education for Bellevue's children despite unreliable state funding for public schools.
Its mission remains consistent: to promote and help fund the best possible learning opportunities for all students in the Bellevue School District. During its 28-year
history, the BSF has raised over $14 million for programs that reach over 16,500 students every year.
As a private, non-profit organization, the BSF depends on individual, foundation, and corporate donors in order to fund its school programs. In partnership with the
Bellevue School District and Parent-Teacher Associations, the Bellevue Schools Foundation helps Bellevue's public school students achieve academic excellence.
